DILG Celebrates Rural Women’s Day

Did you know that every 15th of October, the country celebrates the Rural Women’s Day? That’s right and this year is not an exemption as the country celebrates this important day. The Department of Interior and Local Government is one government agency that took the lead in the celebration of this event. The department courtesy of the office of Secretary Ronnie Puno has issued a memorandum which urges local government units to celebrate this important day by the initiation of simple yet important and symbolic activities.

The celebration of the Rural Women’s Day in the country is actually pursuant to Proclamation Number 1105 that was issued in 1997, and under the proclamation it was mandated that this day be celebrated on the 15th of October. The celebration of Rural Women’s Day is not just confined in the country but this is an international day of celebration as well as other countries celebrate this important day as well. For this year’s celebration, the Department of Interior and Local Government has identified a special theme- Paigtingin at Palawaakin ang Pakikilahok ng Kababaihan Para sa Pagbabagong may Pagkapantay-pantay.

When the United Nations commented on the country’s implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women, the council said the country should increase its efforts to allow for greater women participation in public and political exercises and the council also cited the need to involve the rural women. And this call by the UN was taken seriously and there are now initiatives that are being considered as part of the celebration of the Rural Women’s Day. The United Nations also issued the challenge and called for the improvement of access of women to basic services like health care, social security, education, clear water and sanitation. The same organization has also called on the national institutions to increase the access when it comes to economic opportunities. And these are exactly the things being considered by government offices, like the Department of Interior and Local Government. For this year’s celebration, the office of Secretary Ronnie Puno opted for simple yet meaningful way to celebrate the day like the hanging of streamers and organization of town hall meetings.
