In every presidential election, the focus is always on the candidates running for president. Well this can be expected since it’s the president who leads the nation, and the president is the face of the country when our country is invited ito attend international conferences and meetings. Another reason why the race for the vice presidency gets less attention is due to the quality of the candidates in the field. It’s the same old candidates who are from the Senate who are trying to train and establish themselves in order to be primed up as the next presidential candidate in the next elections. But the good news is that the 2010 national elections is expected to be lively and populated with quality and interesting candidates. And this is true even to the race to the vice presidency.
A few months ago, the landscape can be considered as boring and predictable. But as the first few months of 2009 ended, the electorate has been treated to a whole new dynamics. New names have been floated around and interesting and quality personalities have been forwarded as possible names for the vice presidency. One such name belongs to Secretary Ronnie Puno of the Department of Interior and Local Government or the DILG. The good secretary has formally announced that he would be seeking his party’s blessing as its candidate for vice president in the May 2010 elections.
Aside from serving as a secretary of DILG, Mr. Puno is also the co-vice chairman of the Lakas-Kampi-CMD. So what’s the major competence of Secretary Puno that made him throw his hat in the ring? When asked during their party caucus, the secretary said that his core competence lies in public service and his long background as a public official makes him a good choice. He added that though he is known more as a campaign manager, his experience and loyalty to his clients make him a good vice president so that the next president can effectively lead the country ‘beyond 2010 into continued prosperity’. The entry of Puno was welcomed by pundits and analysts alike. Majority of the observers point to his acute political sense and his commitment to reform as his core credentials, and these are reasons too why he is an excellent candidate to join the pool of candidates for the vice presidency.
